About us

We're a web design and development studio based in Chicago, Illinois. We believe that websites on their most fundamental level are living documents:

  • living documents: derivative of print mediums, websites should retain a degree of structured rigidity to make the information they deliver familiar and quickly comprehensible
  • living documents: how can the static form of a print document charm and surprise a user in subtle ways?

Though custom website builds are our specialty, we can do just about anything you might need done on the web. Check out the table below for a full list of our services.

We've worked with

  • like a field: We designed and developed the website for a digital journal of art and poetry.
  • Admit Report: We developed a blog that has averaged 30,000 organic search sessions per month over the last year.
  • Wellthy: We built a scalable ecosystem of dynamic landing pages, allowing for personalized onboarding information across hundreds of clients and multiple languages without the need for recurring help from a developer.
  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: We wrote custom code solutions to fill in functionality gaps left by AFSP's CRM and email management platform.
  • Inspired by Iceland: We resolved a series of newsletter deliverability issues and managed a complex email marketing campaign.

Web designOur design philosophy can be summed up as a full embrace of the web medium. We iterate websites through code (with minimal use of design programs) to achieve simple, functionalist designs and affordable scopes of work. If this isn't your style, we're also happy to work with a designer of your choice or find one on your behalf.

Project archetypes

Our rates aren't super useful without a sense of how long things will take to get done. Most projects fall into one of the categories below:

Polish (3-10 hours)

Bite-sized scope of work to fine tune your existing website. Examples include resolving responsiveness issues, fixing broken interfaces and restoring functionalities that have been lost or inadvertently changed.

Simple project (15-30 hours)

Small website with simple design and relatively static content. Examples include business landing pages and simple portfolio websites with lightweight content management systems.

Complex project (40-100 hours)

Large website with complicating factors. Examples include advanced content management systems, account functionality, ecommerce, persistent user-generated data, and API integrations.
